The Maya's extreme modifications started at birth. Balls were hung between children's eyes to make them "cross eyed." Babies were also fitted with wooden molds upon their foreheads. The purpose was to reshape their heads into a continuous slope that started at the bridge of their noses and angled back to the top of their foreheads. Crossed eyes and sloping foreheads were considered beautiful to the Maya people, and most strived to attain these features.
